This study investigated early changes in retinal astrocytes during diabetes using a mouse model of hyperglycemia. The researchers found that astrocytes undergo morphological remodeling in response to high blood sugar levels and intravitreal injury. These changes affect the astrocytes’ interaction with neurons and blood vessels. The study also observed increased uptake of cholera toxin B by astrocytes and increased leukocyte infiltration in the retina under certain conditions. These findings have implications for current diabetic retinopathy treatments involving intravitreal injections.
