Kinuthia et al. investigated the role of microglia-driven inflammatory responses in diabetic retinopathy (DR) using two mouse models that mimic key features of human DR. Both models showed compromised blood-retina barrier integrity, increased secretion of angiogenic and inflammatory factors, and sustained microglia reactivity accompanied by upregulation of disease-associated genes. Treatment with minocycline was not sufficient to preserve visual acuity, measured with Striatech’s OptoDrum, but it attenuated these inflammatory responses and preserved retinal vascular and structural integrity.
