Researchers studied what happens when the eye’s focusing muscle (the ciliary muscle) is overstimulated using a drug called pilocarpine in guinea pigs. They measured changes in refraction, using Striatech’s photorefractor. While the overall shape of the eye did not change significantly, the muscle’s ability to adjust focus became impaired. Overstimulation caused harmful changes inside muscle cells, including increased oxidative stress, excess calcium buildup, and damage to mitochondria, leading to cell aging and death. The findings suggest that controlling calcium levels may help protect the eye’s focusing ability.
