Uveitis is an inflammation in the eye, and it can be studied in experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) mice. Here, Hösel et al investigated the effects of treatment by intravitreal injection of a neutralizing anti-interleukin-6 antibody. Results showed significantly higher visual acuity, as measured with the OptoDrum, and lower clinical scores in treated eyes compared to control eyes. This study suggests that intravitreal anti-IL-6 treatment may be a promising approach for noninfectious uveitis, warranting further investigation.

Uveitis is a collection of over 30 diseases characterized by internal inflammation of the eye. Just recently, the NEI-funded “Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group” published classification criteria to help with better disease-specific approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Translational research is also an important factor to finding new treatments. We would like to highlight a study from the University of Kiel, Germany, in which Striatech’s #OptoDrum was used to measure the visual acuity of mice during the course of Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis (EAU). The authors could show that OptoDrum results correlated well with the clinical disease score of murine EAU, providing a relevant functional, in-vivo and longitudinal approach to evaluate novel therapeutic agents in translational uveitis research.
